The 1401 Symbolic Programming System (SPS) was developed in 1959. It executed on a computer with only 1400 bytes of memory. It converted source language into object code in two passes. 1401 Autocoder was the first assembly language in wide use. It was developed in 1960 for the tape version of the IBM 1401.
